In Kentucky, there’s a saying: ‘I don’t smoke and I don’t chew and I don’t go out with girls that do.’ Frankly, God could care less about that stuff, and if a person wants to feel self-righteous by that kind of superficial behavior, that’s sin, because self-righteousness is a way of isolating ourselves from other people. It turns them into ‘they,’ and ‘they’ are people we don’t want to associate with; ‘they’ are people we don’t want to care about.
